The Annual Kure Beach Community Center BBQ Fundraiser has been expanding every year and this year is no exception. The Community Center recently welcomed more than 300 people to enjoy a delicious BBQ meal with all the trimmings, accompanied by entertaining music by the local band The Tide Travelers. While the increase in attendance in recent years has been attributed to word-of-mouth reviews locally, it now seems that word is spreading far and wide. One vacationer said he comes to Kure Beach for the BBQ fundraiser every year and had been looking forward to this year’s event for months, while others acknowledged the good fortune of discovering the event by chance and plan to target the third Saturday in August for future visits. Many Pleasure Island residents commented on their appreciation of the annual fundraiser, lamenting that they wish it could be held more than once a year. “Where else can you go for a delicious meal at such a great price?” asked one happy customer before adding that the music made this year’s event even better.
Much credit for the success of the day goes to the many volunteers, including Mayor Emilie Swearingen and Commissioner Joseph Whitley, who pulled their efforts together for setting up the Community Center for the BBQ, serving food and drinks for the duration, and cleaning up after the excitement was over. Further credit goes to The Tide Travelers, who donated their time and talents to enhance the dining experience for all who came. Community Center Committee Chairperson Robin Sack says, “I would like to thank all my fellow Kure Beach Community Center volunteers and all those in our town who came together and helped to make our annual barbeque such a great success”.
But without the generosity of local businesses this fundraiser could not have been the success that it was. Barbeque from Middle of the Island and cole slaw from Big Daddy’s are a big hit year after year. And the drinks are always cold thanks to Blue Marlin’s donation of an endless supply of ice. The Kure Beach Community Center Committee is very grateful to Big Daddy’s, Blue Marlin and Middle of the Island for their continued support.
