We have experienced some feedback on the recent water billing. Council, the Finance Department and I want to explain what is going on and make sure the right conclusion is achieved for everyone. The October water bill was higher than normal for many residents. This was because preparation for Hurricane Florence, subsequent debris cleanup and repairs left limited staff resources to read the meters for September’s usage. Everyone was therefore billed the minimum charge in September. Many of you saw a reduced bill to what you may normally have paid and some saw no difference. In October’s billing, you were not charged for double use, you were charged for the actual use of the two month period as indicated on the water meters. For many people, this put you into a larger usage pool with a higher rate which resulted in larger than normal bills. We encourage you to look at the last two bills, and if the total cost is more than your normal two months of billing, contact the Finance Department for an averaging solution that MAY generate a credit.
We are in the midst of closing the yearly audit required by the State, and generating all the paperwork for FEMA recoveries on Town hurricane expenses, so please give the Finance team some time to respond. I know we can count on you and you can count on the Finance Department and Council to successfully resolve this matter.
