Ocean Rescue Team

The Town of Kure Beach Ocean Rescue Team plays a vital role in ensuring the safety of residents and visitors along our shoreline. The program is operated through the Kure Beach Fire Department and is overseen by Lieutenant JD Lanier.

Each summer, our highly trained Ocean Rescue staff monitor the beach, respond to emergencies, and help promote water safety throughout the community.

Team Structure

The Ocean Rescue team consists of approximately 35 seasonal lifeguards, including leadership staff:

  • Head Lifeguard
  • Assistant Head Lifeguard
  • Lifeguards
  • Community Risk Reduction Specialist

All team members are trained in ocean rescue techniques, first aid, CPR, and public safety response.

Lifeguard Tryouts – Summer 2026 - Applicants only have to attend one tryout. Please arrive 15 minutes early to complete paperwork prior to the start of the tryout. Parking located at the Kure Beach Fire Department with short walk to guard shack. Parking elsewhere is subject to paid parking enforcement.

  • April 25 at 10:00AM until tryout completed
  • May 2 at 10:00AM until tryout completed

Tryout Requirements

  • 1 Mile Run
  • 500 Meter Ocean Swim immediately following the run

Location

Ocean Rescue operations are based to the right of the Kure Beach Pier at the Guard Shack.

Pay

Seasonal Lifeguards start at $20.00 per hour or $21.00 for EMT-B
