RESIDENTIAL CURBSIDE PICKUP

In August 2011, all residences received a 65-gallon green recycle cart with a yellow lid. The lid has a photo of what can and cannot be recycled. The Town contracts with Waste Management for curbside recycling for residences and businesses and your Recycle Fee is included in your monthly utility bill.

RECYCLE COLLECTION SCHEDULE

Recycle collection is on the same day as your normal garbage collection day, even during holidays. The only day Waste Management does not pick up recycling is on Christmas Day.

OVERFLOW RECYCLING MATERIAL

Do not put overflow recyclables at the side of your cart for pickup. If you have overflow, take it to the NHC Recycle Center at the Moose Lodge on Carolina Beach Road.

Directions: Going north, when you reach the intersection of Carolina Beach and College Roads (at Monkey Junction), turn left. The Moose Lodge is about ½ mile ahead on the left.

TO ORDER A NEW OR REPLACEMENT RECYCLE CART

If you have a newly constructed house and need a cart or If your recycle cart is lost or damaged, please contact Town Hall. If your new recycle cart isn't dropped off to you by Waste Management within 5 business days, please contact Town Hall.

TO ORDER ADDITIONAL RECYCLE CARTS

You may want to have more than one recycle cart, especially if you have a lot of overflow recyclables each week that you have to cart up to the county's recycling center. If you wish to have additional carts, please call Town Hall. If your additional recycle cart isn't dropped off to you by Waste Management within 5 business days, please contact Town Hall. NOTE: This will cost you extra as recycle carts are charged on a per recycle cart, per month basis in your monthly utility bill.

COMMERCIAL BUSINESS CURBSIDE RECYCLE PICKUP

Curbside recycling is available to businesses at the same rate as residential recycling. Contact Town Hall to get started, if you are already set up for recycling service.

COUNTY MOBILE HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION (HAZWAG)

New Hanover County is encouraging residents to safely dispose of toxic materials with its new mobile collection unit, the HazWagon. Beginning Monday, January 16th, the HazWagon will be stationed at three different locations in New Hanover County to collect household hazardous waste and electronics free of charge.

Residents can bring items to the following locations each week:

  • Mondays at the Ogden Park ball fields, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
  • Wednesdays at the Wrightsville Beach Municipal Complex, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
  • Fridays at the Carolina Beach Mike Chappell Park (south side of park, across from tennis courts), from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
  • "The HazWagon was created in response to feedback from citizens who wanted a more convenient way to dispose of household hazardous waste," said Environmental Management Director Joe Suleyman. "This waste can be harmful to our health and to the environment if it is absorbed into the ground or into our water supply. The HazWagon will make it easier for residents to do their part and divert these contaminants from the landfill."

In addition to the HazWagon, residents can bring household hazardous waste to the permanent facility located at 3002 US Highway 421 North, Monday-Friday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m.-noon.

All collected materials are recycled, repurposed, neutralized, used for alternative power generation, or disposed of in accordance with state and federal law. Due to space limitations, no more than 10 gallons of liquid waste and no more than two TVs can be brought to the HazWagon at a time.

New Hanover County Environmental Management partnered with UNCW's Sustainability Committee to create the name "HazWagon." Learn more about this new, free service here.
