We are excited to announce that the Town of Kure Beach is partnering with the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s Department of Film Studies to produce a documentary about Hurricane Fran, which hit Kure Beach 30 years ago on September 5, 1996.
Led by highly acclaimed documentary filmmaker and UNCW Professor Laura Dunn, a team of graduate students will produce a short film that will focus primarily on the personal stories of people who experienced Hurricane Fran firsthand. The documentary will also capture the incredible power of the storm and its lasting impact on our small coastal community.
We are currently targeting an early December screening of the completed film for the Kure Beach community.
We need your help in telling our story.
While the Town recently asked residents to share photographs and video from Hurricane Fran, we are now looking for people who were here on the island during the storm and would be willing to share their personal experiences in an interview with the documentary team.
If you lived in Kure Beach during Hurricane Fran and would be willing to participate, please contact the KB Recreation Department (parks@townofkurebeach.org) as soon as possible so we can get you scheduled. Interviews are currently planned for September 9, September 16, and September 23, depending on the number of volunteers.
This documentary is about much more than a hurricane. It is an opportunity to preserve an important part of Kure Beach history and, most importantly, to capture the stories of the people who lived through it.
We are very proud to partner with UNCW and our community on this project. Together, we can remember the lessons of Hurricane Fran, reinforce the importance of hurricane preparedness, and celebrate the special character, commitment, and perseverance of the Kure Beach community that came together to rebuild in its aftermath.
