Dear Citizens,
The upcoming weather forecast shows the potential for heavy rain, with locally heavy flooding possible in the area. A slow-moving cold front will approach and stall over southeast North Carolina later Thursday through Friday. Multiple rounds of heavy rainfall could produce rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches, with locally higher amounts possible.
The Public Works Department will be out ensuring storm drains are cleared throughout the day and that are systems are running as designed. The Police and Fire Departments are also in the ready state and making preparations.
Please inspect your properties to ensure there is no loose debris that can end up in the storm drains should we get standing water. Loose debris can impact the overall system and slow down the draining capacity.
If you get into a situation in which the roads are covered in floodwater, do not attempt to drive through them. Driving through deep water is extremely dangerous and should be avoided. Even a small amount of water can cause a vehicle to lose control or stall. Just six inches of water can be enough to cause a loss of control and potentially stall many passenger vehicles. If you are in doubt, just remain where you are and wait until the water recedes. If you drive through water and your car loses power, call 911.
