NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – Community members needing to securely destroy documents that contain personal information can take advantage of free events providing this service across the county this June.
In partnership with New Hanover County Recycling and Solid Waste, the Senior Resource Center will host five Shred-A-Thons throughout the community in the coming weeks. Residents are limited to a maximum of two boxes per vehicle, but shredding is offered at no cost thanks to grant funding from the N.C. Senior Medicare Patrol and the N.C. Department of Insurance’s SHIIP Division. Additional support for this event has been provided by the Cape Fear Area Agency on Aging.
“We are excited to be able to offer more opportunities for people to safely dispose of confidential and sensitive paperwork, preventing personal information from being used fraudulently,” said Senior Resource Center Director Amber Smith. “The first week of June is Medicare Fraud Prevention Week (June 1-5), so these events are a way to extend assistance to our community, making sure personal information doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.”
The shred truck will follow the county’s HazWagon schedules for select dates, allowing residents to dispose of household hazardous waste that should be diverted from the landfill, including things like paint, chemicals, liquids or electronics.
These drive-thru events are as follows:
- Saturday, June 6, from 10 a.m. -2 p.m. at Kure Beach Town Hall (117 Settlers Lane)
- Monday, June 8, from 10 a.m. -2 p.m. at Ogden Park (615 Ogden Park Drive)
- Friday, June 12, from 10 a.m. -2 p.m. at Carolina Beach’s Mike Chappell Park (501 Dow Rd S.)
- Monday, June 15, from 10 a.m. -2 p.m. at Ogden Park
- Friday, June 19, from 10 a.m. -2 p.m. at Carolina Beach’s Mike Chappell Park
Additionally, the shred truck will also be at the City of Wilmington’s “Keys to Homeownership Expo” at the MLK Center (401 S. 8th Street) from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, June 13. Please note that the HazWagon will not be at this event.
Residents are encouraged to bring unwanted documents that contain sensitive information, such as bank statements, medical records, credit card offers, and other documents containing personal or financial information.
